I
bought my first photography camera ten years ago. Working primarily with
film, I am fascinated with the mysterious workings between chemicals and
light.
On many excursions, as I capture moving lights under long exposure, not
really
knowing how the pictures would turn out, the outcome is ofen the result
of a spontaneous (always hand-held) and speculative approach in abstract
photography.
I am attracted to the painterly quality of imagery, as
it often brings forth its
imaginative aspect. The primary element that I work with
is colour
(vs. occasions, subjects or theme),
and what usually triggers me to shoot is light. As I have traveled
extensively to
many different parts of the world, I have come to enjoy and incessantly
search for
the different spectrum of light and colours, which, for a photographer
like me, is
like discovering a new flavor of ice-cream.
During my travels, I started exploring journalistic photography.
To me, what my picture
collection of people and artifacts reveals, is not merely the beauty
and diversity
of the world, but also the limitation of the photographic image.
In abstract photography I intend to create a space for the viewer to
roam with his/her
imagination; with a picture of, for instance, a Kyrgyz horseman, I feel
tempted
to restrict that space, because unlike abstract photography, there is
'truth' involved.
The string of incidents, facts, as well as the recording experience
that tied in,
somehow prevent these photographs to stand on their own. These limitations
prompted my creation of a multi-media installation 'ver·ri·si·mil·i·tude', and a still
photography installation 'On photography', as
my attempts to convey some of the
experience and reflections I gathered as a self-taught visual artist.
Film to me is the playground
where infinite possibilities arise in the world of imagery,
words and sound. To experiment with the alchemy of these three
elements in film making is my lifelong endeavor. My video collage works
are the results of my experimentation. In my humble opinion, film is
the ultimate art form in the two
dimensional world. I am forever in awe by the magic that it creates.
I also make use of this medium to create dialogues on social issues
and to bring
awareness among people. I have created works that discuss issues on housing
and
disability rights, as well as the complexities of visual representation.
I plan to
continue to make use of this powerful medium to express some of my concerns
regarding the AIDS epidemic, development and its environment impact,
and what is
always my main area of interest: what it means to be human, the human
experience.
Thanks for reading. |
